You look around. You see master chief standing right behind. In front, Harley Quinn, beside her? Why Kylo Ren of course! These are the kinds of things you see around whenever entering any kind of comic convention. We got the opportunity to attend the Cincinnati Comic Expo this past weekend. It was quite the experience! Even though going to Power Up Retro Convention was my first Convention, the one convention in Cincinnati is definitely much bigger in all ways! Taking everything in was very overwhelming and at the same time I was in awe the entire time. Here are some of my thoughts and experiences over the weekend of September 22-24 at Cincinnati Comic Expo.
First I must talk about the show floor. It was incredible seeing all the different vendors, artists, podcasts, and just fans showing off their gear. It was incredible. Little did I know day 1 that I would start seeing these people more and more through different events and being able to talk with them as the show went on. That first day seeing all those people set up, I wanted to show my support to these people somehow and in some way. If I had the money I could! Anyway, I got to see some of the coolest art in person of the things I love the most! Mashup of Darth Vader and Kylo Ren? Got it! Blank ink of Seven from Stranger things? Got it! Holographic Goku? Had that too! To think these people made all this stuff themselves shows how talented and creative people can be and that was just the tip of the iceberg! There were also comic book artists there ready to talk with you and you could buy their work. There were “sketch duals” where audience got to give topics and the artists had to come up with their own rendering of the topic. I can tell you every detail of these duals and still not correctly convey how exciting these were. There were several of them each day and all the artists were friendly and very knowledgeable. I’m not an artist myself but it did make me wish I was one!
Then there were the celebrity panels. Unfortunately I was not able to attend all of them like I wanted to. However I was in attendance for Ralph Macchio(Karate Kid), Daphne Zuniga(Spaceballs), Wallace Shawn(The Princess Bride), Kel Mitchell(Keenan & Kel) and Kevin Sussman(The Big Bang Theory). It was a much different experience for me since I’ve never been in this position before. Hearing each celebrity speak about their experiences, life and knowledge. Each person also had their own take on how they approached acting based on their own instructions and how each director has taught them to push themselves. It was really interesting to hear Wallace Shawn talk about how he went from an English teacher to writer to actor. You just never know what someone's past is until you hear them talk about it! The nicest was Ralph Macchio and the most talkative. He acted like as if he knew everyone and was always shaking hands with everyone. By the way thats saying a lot because everyone was very nice and entertaining.
This was just my personal experience with going to something like this and I only had scratched the surface. There were so many events, so many people i talked to and got to meet. Make sure to head on over to our YouTube page where we will post a vlog of the event. Also, our Instagram page has some great pictures of each day! There was also a lot of things I missed out on that next time i will be checking out! I’m proud to call Cincinnati my hometown. I’m even prouder that Cincinnati was able to host such a wonderful event. I can’t wait until next year! So until next year, Cincinnati Comic Expo 2017 was a great convention to attend!
As always, have a rad day!
